18th-Century Hardstone Cameo Ring of Alexander the Great
A powerful and emotionally charged 18th-century cameo depicting the head of Alexander the Great (356–323 BCE), shown in the dramatic “dying Alexander” pose. Alexander, the legendary Macedonian king who forged one of history’s largest empires—from Greece to India—died at just 32, leaving a legacy that shaped Western culture for millennia. This classical subject was highly prized in the Enlightenment era, symbolising heroism, mortality, and the fragility of greatness.
The cameo is carved from a challenging multi-layered stone, and the artisan has masterfully followed the natural contours of the material, revealing its shifting colours while achieving remarkable depth and expression in Alexander’s features. The result is a carving of exceptional sensitivity and technical accomplishment.
Now mounted in an 18-carat gold Georgian ring, c.1790, the piece unites ancient subject matter with late-18th-century neoclassical taste.
