A Gold And Enamelled Ring Set With a Nicolo Agate Intaglio
A beautifully made early-18th-century French ring set with a small nicolo agate intaglio, finely engraved with a mysterious and evocative scene. The intaglio depicts a seated woman, her legs draped in fabric, her torso cinched by a corseted bodice, a billowing garment falling from her shoulders, and one breast seemingly exposed. She holds a flower perhaps a rose extended at arm’s length, a gesture both poetic and symbolic.
The base of the bezel is encircled by a very fine applied beaded border, a detail typical of high-quality French work around 1700. The reverse of the bezel is richly enamelled in royal blue, while the elegant forked shoulders are decorated with green and white enamel, creating a sophisticated interplay of colour and form.
A rare and atmospheric jewel from the dawn of the 18th century.
