An exceptional and imposing Renaissance ring, crafted in Augsburg circa 1600, exemplifies the sophisticated goldsmithing traditions of one of Europe’s foremost artistic centres. Cast in rich high-carat gold, the ring is set with a substantial rose-cut diamond in a bold, box-shaped collet, dramatically elevated above a deeply chased and sculptural bezel.

The use of the rose cut would have been a technical innovation of the late 16th century. Diamonds of this type are seldom seen in Renaissance jewels, placing this ring among the earliest known examples to feature the “new” cut, then at the forefront of gem cutting experimentation.

The shoulders and shank are adorned with grotesque masks, scrolling elements, and architectural cartouches, all crisply defined in high relief against textured grounds hallmarks of Augsburg’s ornamental exuberance at the dawn of the 17th century. The composition reflects the enduring influence of Mannerist design, where form, fantasy, and symmetry intertwine.

The ring’s substantial weight and commanding presence indicates of courtly nobility.
