Hardstone Cameo Gold Ring Depicting Julia Flavia
A finely carved hardstone cameo depicting Julia Flavia, daughter of the Roman emperor Titus. Shown in elegant classical profile, she wears her hair arranged in the distinctive Flavian style, swept back into a high chignon and framed by soft waves, features consistent with ancient portrait prototypes of Julia Flavia. Her drapery is sensitively modelled, and the carver has made exceptional use of the natural layers of the stone to create depth, contrast, and sculptural presence.
Mounted in an early 19th-century Italian gold ring with a soft, original patina, the cameo exemplifies the neoclassical revival of Roman imperial portraiture during the period. The stone shows natural inclusions characteristic of genuine hand-carved hardstone.
A refined and evocative neoclassical interpretation of Julia Flavia, daughter of Titus and niece of Domitian.
